Shark Beach with Chris Hemsworth

Shark Beach with Chris Hemsworth provides an important platform for shark awareness. As the show’s Official Photographer it is a project I am immensely proud to have been involved with. Working alongside Chris and the likes of Valerie Taylor and Mick Fanning, the project brings together a passionate team of environmentalists and experienced ocean conservationists as they seek to learn more and educate others about sharks. You won’t want to miss it.

Sharks have lived in our oceans for over 400 million years. We need them to keep our oceans healthy and teeming with life. Yet many of us live in fear of sharks. It is a fear generated by negative and emotionally charged media representations depicting the ocean’s top predator. And, although incidents of people being bitten by sharks are extremely rare, there has been a recent increase of incidents in recent times.

The reasons for the increase are complex and range from environmental to social factors. However the fact remains, a world without sharks would have serious consequences for marine and freshwater ecosystems. As well as the many human communities and economies that depend on them. This is why it is important to become educated about sharks and for humanity to find a way to co-exist with them.

A Turning Tide

Over the past decade or so, we’ve seen a huge positive shift in public attitudes towards sharks. Yet fear is a powerful driver of human behaviour. This is why it is important we learn about them, respect them and understand how to co-exist with them.

Get Educated – SharkFest

National Geographic’s SharkFest is the perfect opportunity to get educated on sharks. Over six weeks National Geographic celebrate these amazing predators through their annual television event. It is a time where you’ll be able to immerse yourself in all things shark related with 21 hours of original programming, and 60 hours of enhanced content.

‘Shark Beach’ will be available to watch as part of National Geographic’s SharkFest which kicks off this week. You can catch it on National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo Mundo, Disney XD, and Disney+.

In this one-off special, Shark Beach with Chris Hemsworth, Chris embarks on a personal mission to investigate how we can live more harmoniously with sharks. Chris is an enthusiastic surfer and renowned environmentalist, fascinated by the ocean’s top predator. But he’s equally perplexed by the dangers they pose to humans when we venture into shark territory. In Shark Beach Chris uncovers the complicated truth behind the alarming increase in shark attacks in Australia. Joined by surfers, conservationists, shark advocates and marine biologists, Chris begins his journey in his own backyard at Byron Bay, Australia. He explores new preventative measures and technology which can help stave off shark-human encounters. Divings with sharks himself, Chris accompanies a tagging team as they handle a captured great white. He then helps release it back into the ocean. Chris’s mission to understand sharks is more than a journey. He’s searching for answers to help us live more peacefully with these magnificent creatures.
